You've got excess stuff you need to bring out of the house yet cannot get rid of completely. Sheds function well as outhouse storage. However, they need their own set of shed roofing because they're similar to your home in terms of having four walls and a roof.
If you're just about to construct your shed, it pays to know about the superior shed roofing materials you can use for it. Secrets of Shed Building has a detailed post about shed roofing materials you can use for an excellent installation.
The Best Shed Roofing System: A Guide
To choose an appropriate shed roofing system there are three important factors to consider:
- Waterproof - to keep the contents of the shed dry
- Economic - in its lifetime cost
- Appearance - pleasing to the eye
1. Waterproof
The primary purpose of a shed roof is to protect you and your possession from the weather. To make a roof waterproof, the roof pitch/slope will influence the materials you choose. Roofs can be classified into three broad groups according to roof slope:
Flat roofs: Pitch = 0 to 10 degrees
Roofs with a pitch below 10 degrees are known as 'flat roofs'. For a shed with this type of roof bitumen mineral felt on plywood decking or sheet metal will be the main options. Flat roofs have experienced problems over the years with leakage and durability. The main reason being is that water is not 'encouraged' to drain off the roof. In answer to the question do flat roofs leak? There is a saying in the building industry that there are only two types of flat roof. 'Those that leak.....and those that are going to leak.' (continued)
It's not just materials you'll need to know when building your new shed roofing. It's important to take note of the roof shape that gives it form. Most Corpus Christi TX homeowners prefer using the same roof shape as their home with their shed. However, you're free to use conventional roof shapes when necessary.
Home Improvement Educator gives you a great list of roof shapes to use for shed roofing. However, don't be limited by this list. If you find a certain roof shape appealing, then go for it!
Shed Roofing Shapes That You Can Use For Your Own
In terms of function and construction, a shed roof is essentially no different than the roof of a house. Nevertheless, the same homeowner who's willing to invest in a slate shingle roof for their house might think it's nonsensical to install a similar roof on their shed when a couple of plywood sheets, some 2 x 6 boards, and asphalt shingles will do the job just fine.
While installing a high-end roof on a shed might be unconventional, it's by no means a waste of money. As with any home improvement project you get what you pay for with a shed roof, and spending more will result in a structure that performs and looks better than one covered by budget materials. With that in mind, use the following section to learn more about common roofing styles.
Roof Design
Gable Roof
The simple gable aesthetic adds to a very functional roof that is excellent at deflecting wind, rain, and snow accumulation.
Hip Roof
Hip, or hipped, roofs have a very durable construction capable of withstanding the fiercest winds and the heaviest snow loads. Hipped roofs have eaves on all sides, a feature that allows gutters to be installed on the entire shed perimeter (important if you are concerned about water shedding).

How to Install and Replace Shed Roofing DIY
When it comes to replacing a shed roof, there is an easy option for the DIY-er, which will avoid costly professional help or buying a new shed! Just recently, I was called out to repair a shed roof in the outskirts of London. The damage to the old felt covering was extensive and this meant there was no way to repair effectively. The answer in this case was immediately replacing a shed roof before the structure became irreparably damaged.
Replacing a shed roof is not difficult. The size of the shed should, of course, be taken into account, but generally, the height is not a huge issue; no scaffolding is needed and not special skills required.
As a roof specialist, my time is worth more than the materials involved and I felt it only fair to suggest to the client that he take a stab at replacing a shed roof himself.
At first he seemed a little worried, but I explained a few basics to him and pointed him in the direction of a great shed roof kit that includes everything he needs to get the job of replacing a shed roof done – quickly and easily.
Which leads me to this post…
Many of us roofing specialists charge a call-out fee to give an accurate estimate of the job in hand, materials and labour. If I win the job, I usually deduct my initial fee from the total. It isn’t a massive amount, and my aforementioned shed roof client was happy to pay it when he realised just how much he would save by undertaking the job himself. In this case, we are all happy!
A quick word of advice though – not all of us would be so willing or happy – many contractors will want the entire job and may charge a premium rate to carry out the job of replacing a shed roof. (Read more here)
